Change – what’s stopping you?
It can truly be said that NOTHING changes without some form of action. And the action may have been initiated by you, the small business owner, the franchisee, or it may have come from an external source – your market, the franchisor, your staff, the economy, financial institutions, customers, suppliers, mother nature … any number of places.
What this means is that often we can’t control change. It just happens. And then our reactions to the change will create further change. Action and Reaction.
Many people know from experience that change can be very stressful. Particularly if you did not initiate the change and you’re effectively reacting. As much as we would like to, we can’t control what we can’t control (profound, Huh?).
In a small business change is essential. And as (almost) inevitable as it is, change is often subject to the inertia (resistance to change) of the owner and their motivation. The fear response can be really stimulated if the change is not managed, controlled, in ourselves AND in the business. It’s this fear factor that often prevents us from initiating any change in the first place.
It is wisely written (not by me sadly) that whilst we cannot control what other people do and say, we CAN control our own reaction to the event or saying. We have the power to internalise and control our reactions. For the sake of our sanity, our reputation, our own mindset, self control is a key part of managing change.
Now, let’s look at the size of any change. Small is often best. Little changes will accumulate over time and frequency to create great progress (or the opposite if uncontrolled). Think of it this way, if you make a 1% change in 5 areas of your life or your business, and stay focussed to keep making the change every month, in just 6 months you will have achieved a 30% change.
That’s significant. And simple. It takes your own motivation and drive.
So adopt change, as long as it’s controlled and progressive. Don’t stress over what you can’t control. Be pro-active AND re-active. If you put your mind to it anything is possible.
Even business growth.
